Pramod S Phadke was born in January 1946. Since his childhood, he is interested in mathematics, especially Algebra. In the Secondary School final examination, his optional subject was Higher Mathematics. He scored 100 out of 100 marks in Higher Mathematics in S.S.C. Examination of Gujarat SSCE Board in 1961. Had 17th rank in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) to IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) in 1962 with 100 out of 100 marks in mathematics. This is a record score in JEE.

By training, he is a Chemical Engineer with outstanding academic record. Excelled throughout during his B Tech in Chemical Engineering, was a merit scholar of the Institute (IIT Bombay) and finished among top 10 in the class. He continued further in the same Institute for M Tech and stood first among all branches for M Tech.

During his M Tech project work, he had exposure to the use of Analog and Digital computers. He has single-handedly developed a wide range of software for optimum designing of most of the types of shell-and-tube type heat exchangers, condensers, reboilers etc. He also has wide range of programs such as multicomponent continuous distillation simulation with different types of non-idealities; batch distillation simulation; hydrodynamics for different types of distillation columns; piping design and pressure drop calculations for single or two-phase flow; piping stress analysis for thermal, pressure and gravity loads etc.

He has published 11 articles, short communications, etc., in international journals devoted to Chemical Engineering. Using his software, he operated successfully as a free-lance consulting chemical engineer (Professional Engineer) from November 1977 till September 2011, a span of about 34 years. In this long career, he has designed and commissioned successfully 127 distillation columns and in excess of 2,500 heat exchangers, condensers, reboilers, etc.

Throughout his career as a chemical engineer, he kept on taking keen interest in mathematical puzzles of different types. Having had exposure to computers and programming, it was just one step further to apply his skills for solving mathematical puzzles. He has published a book in August-September 2007 titled "Computer Programs for Solving Mathematical Puzzles". Now in retirement (as far as professional duties are concerned), he keeps himself busy solving puzzles from websites such as Project Euler; isolating non-isomorphic solutions for closed Knight's Tours of the chessboard; research in Rubik's Cube, Tangrams, etc.
